Pinned down by fire, one member of the Australian Contingent had his horse killed beneath him. So, he jumped up behind a comrade and the whole contingent galloped away, leaping a high barbed wire boundary fence in the process. It became a popular music hall song and was a favourite of Scottish singer Harry Lauder. The song was revived by Rolf Harris in 1969, when he sang it on the Children’s TV show Crackerjack! And it somewhat mirrored the experience of his father rescuing his wounded uncle under fire in the dying days of World War One, although his uncle later died of his wounds. Two Little Boys became the last UK No.1 of the 60s, and the first UK No.1 of the 70s. In 1979, while being interviewed on BBC Radio Blackburn, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher named it as one of her favourite songs. In 2014, Harris was convicted and imprisoned for the sexual assault of four underage girls. One of the charges was overturned on appeal, and Harris was released in 2017.
