“Can you do a cover of 'Where the Streets Have no name'?” A very rare request from a very special person - Dr. Sujit Vasudevan is one of the finest physicians, an eloquent speaker, and a great human being. He is a role model for so many of us. When he asked me if I could do a cover of one of the greatest songs by U2, I immediately said ‘Yes!”
But as I started working on this project, I realized how tough it was. In fact, U2, the band struggled to get this song recorded and this was the song they spent the longest hours in the whole of the album - The Joshua Tree. Everything in the song started to look so complex. The drums part by Larry Mullen Jr was not the kind of your ‘everyday drumming’ style. Bono’s (Paul David Hewson) voice was challenging to emulate. Adam Clayton’s bass was so well-rounded, yet so powerful. The song has 2 time signatures, complex arrangements and to top it all, the 1/8th dotted delay work of ‘The Edge’ (David Howell Evans) - the ultimate frontier of the ‘Delay’ effect!
My first effects pedal was a locally made Delay stomp box pedal. The varying echoes and repeats you get while playing with these effects gave me some company while practicing alone. ‘The Edge’ is the person who made the Delay seem like a stand-alone instrument in the band - it defined the sound of U2. I am glad I could get the settings close enough to the Delay settings by ‘The Edge’ in this recording.
This was a very exciting project. I used a totally different set of instruments - thanks to my Cousin, Unni (Anil Sudarshan) and his Son, Appu (Alan) who gave their musical treasures (A Fender Squire, Ibanez Bass, 2 Cubes, and Mapex Tornado Drum Kit) to us for safekeeping, as Anil, a software engineer with HP, migrated with his family to the USA.
I would never have even dreamed of doing this song. But thanks to Dr. Sujit Vasudevan, for encouraging me to do this amazing song! This is a special dedication to Dr. Sujit - Thank you, Sir.
