| Video Discription | When one thinks of aircraft utilized on wildland fires, they often think about helicopters with buckets of water and planes dropping retardant. However with the advancements in technology, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS or "drones") have become another tool that firefighters use to fight wildfires. These are not your normal recreational UAS. These aircraft are designed to support many different missions including reconnaissance flights, fire perimeter mapping, and aerial ignitions. Last week we posted a video that described the use of a Type 3 UAS that is used to conduct aerial ignitions. Join us as we learn from the team currently assigned to the Type 1 UAS/Drone working on Schneider Springs Fire. They describe the capabilities and benefits to firefighters that these new air resources provide. This Type 1 UAS resembles an airplane and is being used to patrol the fire at night scanning the perimeter for any spot fires that escape containment lines. |
