6:18 shows a single hand fly casting technique that is very useful for casting long distances with high linespeeds.
If you are interested into fly fishing and casting flies long distances, or Spey casting flies long distances to far away lies, which means higher linespeeds and more efficiency, you can incorporate elements of the Underhand casing technique for most types of fly fishing, from Spey Casting to overhead fly casting.
The Underhand cast as promoted by Klaus Frimor and Goran Anderson can be easily misunderstood simply because of the name Underhand cast. Another term that can be used to describe this casting technique is Scandi Casting, which Klaus Frimor uses interchangeable.
Underhand casting can be used in one handed overhead casting. At first glance its easy to think the style involves flipping the rod in an underhand fashion as one would for casting a baitcaster for Bass. But underhand casting, in the flyfishing world refers to a dominant use of the bottom hand with the two handed fly rod when sweeping the rod to form the D loop before the forward cast. The bottom hand is used to form a half circle from the top of the hip to to "key position" which is the position a caster is in right before he applies. the forward stroke. The forward stroke is done primarily with the bottom hand by pulling the butt of the fly rod back to the starting point with proper, gradual acceleration and makes contact with the top of the thigh to stop the rod. The top hand is used in the forward stroke very firmly. This must be understood in order to get the most out of underhand casting. The secret in top hand use is that the stroke length is not very far. The rod is stopped with the upper hand also at the two oclock position.
Fly fishing, casting long distance efficiently:
For Single hand fly casting, underhand casting means the bottom hand is used to haul the fly line before the forward stroke, to help fly cast a long distance. In touch and go one hand scandi casting, a haul isn't usually required for the sweep to form the D loop because not much power is needed. But the haul is used for the forward stroke to propel the fly a long distance, or even a medium distance because the forward stroke is stopped very high.
For overhead fly casting which can be accomplished with the underhand casting technique as made famous by Klaus Frimor and Goran Anderssen, the haul can be used in the back cast and the forward cast to provide longer fly casting distance and more power.
Fly fishing: Casting long distance incorporating the bottom hand, or Underhand:
This haul can easily be incorporated onto any fly casting and is not exclusive to the underhand style of casting. It is a very useful tool for all fly fishermen, and though it is not necessarily a beginner move, I think it is one element that shouldn't cause intimidation for beginning fly fishermen wanting to advance to the next level.
The haul can be used in all single hand, overhead fly casting disciplines from casting heavy articulated Kelly Galloup style flies for trophy trout, to indicator nymphing to give the caster more power, or for casting dry flies to rising trout. This video started as a two minute afterthought about some of the things I left out of the video, The Mother of All Casting Videos. It ended up being well over 10 minutes long and I ended up editing a bunch of redundant stuff out of it.
Still, I forgot to add a couple things that could be a big help in your two handed casting all together, the first being that with short shooting heads, if you want to achieve more line speed keep your hands close together. If you have read down this far, let me know it by posting a little comment if you kindly would. A simple "yup!" or TS for tip speed, which is what you produce by holding your hands closer together when you cast, it produces more line speed. Thanks for reading down this far.
Also, if your casting cach handed, You may not have the strength to keep your hands close together, so spreading them out may help, it will give you more power with which to cast and give you a physical advantage that you would not have, had you held your hands close together, but not had the strength to take advantage of the leverage it provides. Comment Cack, if you read this. Thanks...Tight lines. |
