Created in 1980 by the United Steel Workers of America, "Faces of a Union" features some of the 1.4 million Americans who were union members. The film includes images of American and Canadian factories and production, as well as striking workers on the picket line (1:17) demanding their rights. At 1:26 workers clock into a Kaiser Aluminum plant. At 2:16 new union members learn about their membership rights and put on unions pins. At 2:35 historic footage of workers are shown. At 2:45 coal and iron ore mines are shown as well as processing facilities and steel mills (3:02). Working conditions were dangerous and pay was often poor. At 3:30, the story of the 1936 C.I.O. effort to organize workers, led by Philip Murray (3:51) is described. At 4:01 the successful organization of the union is shown. At 4:27 open pit mining operations are shown with union workers, metal fabrication (4:48) and smelting (4:57), and more. At 5:49 textile and furniture workers are shown as well as copper wiring, welding, and assembly line operations. At 6:58 a collective bargaining meeting is shown at the international union's headquarters. At 7:23 modern computer systems are shown being used as part of the "coordinated bargaining" negotiation. At 8:29, strikes in the 1930s are shown in newsreel highlights. At 9:30 the strike fund is explained. At 10:30 office workers are identified as some of the next workers to be organized. At 11:38, work is shown in Canada to organize and at 11:54 a strike in Toronto is shown. At 12:35 an abandoned zinc plant in Pennsylvania is shown, it was closed without any warning and all 1200 workers were laid off. At 14:00, discussions between U.S. and Japanese representatives are shown, discussing international trade and impact on the North American workers. At 16:55, healthcare for workers is shown, and at 17:00 smokestacks belch smoke and the impact on workers is discussed. At 17:30 a funeral for a deceased worker is shown and the worker eulogized. At 20;18 the Wagner Act is discussed and the process of collective bargaining. At 20;33 steel workers are shown at a phone bank making calls to the members. At 21:44 the retired steel workers' housing is shown. At 22:00 a union hall is shown full of retirees. At 24:34 union members are shown receiving more education about their rights. At 24:54 workers are shown leaving the factory and clocking out (25:08) as the shift ends.
