"The former president is safe," is what The Secret Service reported after shots were fired at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was speaking for about 5 minutes before the assassination attempt. Trump was immediately escorted off the stage after the shots were fired. Washington leaders reacted to the news with near-universal shock and condemnation of political violence. "Violence has no place in politics, ever," Washington Governor Jay Inslee said on X. "Our thoughts are with all who attended the former president’s event, and I join the many others who are expressing gratitude for the Secret Service and first responders." Gubernatorial candidates Bob Ferguson, Semi Bird, and Dave Reichert echoed Inslee's comments on X. "I condemn this act of violence against former President Donald Trump in the strongest possible terms," Ferguson said. "As a nation, we must come together." "There is strength in unity and faith," Bird posted.
