Designation: Neha Srivastava, IFS Officer (2016 Batch)
Hello friends, I am Neha Srivastava, I am an IFS Officer of 2016 batch. In this video, I am going to talk about a few things regarding the IFS examination, the pattern of the examination and very frequently asked questions like the eligibility criteria, the number of attempts which are counted, how was my life as an aspirant and what kept me motivated, what to do when you are demotivated, general booklist and other few things.
Title: Eligibility
So regarding the pattern of the examination, every year UPSC releases a very detailed notification regarding the examination for IFS and CSE. Still there are a few doubts pop-up in minds of aspirants like the eligibility criteria, so for IFS examination every science graduate is eligible for the exam except the MBBS and BDS Graduates. I am a B.Tech in Biotechnology, so I was eligible through my engineering degree. Apart from that when you will see the UPSC Notification, you will see there are many subjects, so if you have those subjects in your graduation, then you are eligible for the exam. Like if you are a B.Sc in Pharmacy but you have a study of Physics or Chemistry or something, and still in case of any doubt, whatever I am telling you is not the official statement, if you have any doubt you can anytime write to UPSC.
Title: Attempts
Then number of attempts, it is very simple, since 2013 both IFS and CSE exams have been combined. So while filling up the form there are options we can apply only for IFS only for CSE or both. So if one has applied only for IFS and then for the Prelims examination, then the attempt would be calculated only for IFS, same if you have applied only for CSE then attempt would be calculated only for CSE, if both then for both. Remember one thing that attempt for either CSE or IFS is calculated only when one has appeared for the Prelims examination. If one skips the Prelims examination, that attempt is not counted at all.
Title: Pattern of the IFoS Exam
Then, the pattern of the examination, as we know there are three stages of the exam. the first part is the screening exam which is called Prelims. Second one is the Mains examination. In mains examination it is subjective in kind of nature, you have to write long answer kind of answers and at the end it is interview, it is not basically interview it is the personality test. Title: How tough is IFoS Exam?
Now I am many times asked that how tough is the IFS examination, so actually how tough is any exam depends on the preparation level of the aspirant. If one’s preparation level is among the top 1% then it is not tough, if that level of preparation is not that par, then it is very tough. There is not particular answer that how tough is the exam, but we can go through the statistics that around 10 Lakh people every year apply for CSE exam and around 4-5 lakh appear for the Prelims examination of which around 1 to 1.5 Lakh apply for both CSE and IFOS. Then considering only about the IFOS then we can say that around 1 to 1.5 lakh appear for the Prelims, then 1% that is 1000-1200 people are called for the Mains, so success rate in Prelims is 1%. Then the cut-off, the cut-off goes a little higher for the IFS examination, it is because the number of people comparing to the seats are more. There are 110 seats and 1 lakh people are applying for that, so definitely the cut-off goes higher for the IFS exam and Prelims is considered as the toughest stage, however it’s not a general rule.
