In reality, China doesn't use the term "slums," and those run-down neighborhoods are commonly referred to as urban villages. Urban villages can be found in almost every Chinese city, and their existence is often a result of historical reasons related to urban development. The residents are often those who were relocated due to demolitions or individuals working nearby. Living in urban villages is not inherently dangerous because these areas are equipped with 24-hour surveillance, and the residents are generally friendly. These urban villages often occupy prime locations. For instance, the Fulong Community I'm about to visit is just 2 kilometers away from the city center of southern Chengdu, and a Walmart supermarket is only 50 meters outside the community. Many people choose to live here for the convenience of work. The rent is also very affordable, only half of that in other neighborhoods in the same area. Additionally, there are many grocery stores and street food stalls, making life very convenient. Some residents in these areas are quite wealthy, such as landlords who own more than a dozen houses.
