The name of the leader of Germany during World War 2 should come as no surprise: Adolf Hitler. Hitler, born a farmer's son, became the Fuhrer of Germany by leading his National Socialist German Worker's Party or Nazi party to electoral success, securing enough seats in the parliament and making the proper negotiations so that he could become the chancellor. When the President of Germany died, he also managed to take that position. Opposition parties were eventually banned, and Germany became a dictatorship, with Hitler at its helm as the Fuhrer, which means leader in German.
The emperor of Japan came from a much different background. Emperor Shōwa or Hirohito was born to be emperor as the first son of the crown prince Yoshihito. He became emperor in 1926 after his father died. While he supposedly had absolute power and was worshiped as a god, the military complex in Japan had a lot of energy, and Japan was under official military dictatorship from 1930 until 1945. Hence, it is controversial regarding the degree of responsibility Hirohito held for the war. He was never prosecuted for war crimes. He died in 1989.
