These are broadly categorized into 2 functions … that which is reducing or catabolic: such as langhana, rukshana & svedana. And that which is nourishing, expansive or that which is anabolic — for example, brimhana, snehana & stambhana. Going back to the elementals and looking at the qualities of vāta dosha. Vāta is dry, light, cold, rough, subtle & mobile qualities. Therefore, the first line of management for balancing excess vāta dosha is applying the opposing qualities of dryness with oiliness via snehana — and balancing the excess quality of lightness with heaviness via brimhana. HOWEVER — before jumping to this conclusion we must first consider and determine determine whether vāta is involved with Dhātu kshaya; or depletion of bodily tissue or if vāta is increased & associated with āma, which vāta becomes stagnant; having an obstructive nature; and tends to be far more pathologic.
