| Video Discription | Thus far, India has basked in the glory of being in a select group of countries that offer the cheapest data across the world. As of 2022, even after the 2021 tariff hike by Indian telcos, India was third only to Israel and Italy in the cost per GB of data at $0.17 or just ₹12.58 per GB as per the rupee-dollar exchange rate of about 74 rupees per dollar in 2021. Countries like US and South Korea are among the most expensive in the world. But with last week’s tariff hike – are those days of cheap data now over? Let’s take a look. But first, some background to the hike. This tariff hike by telecom companies had been in the making for a long time. Airtel was keen to take ARPU or average revenue per user up to 300 rupees a month from the pre-hike average of about 209 rupees per user per month. The ARPU for Jio was lower at ₹182, and the lowest was that of Vodafone Idea at ₹146. But Airtel was unable to hike tariff because of pressure from market leader Reliance Jio that kept a tight hold on prices in India’s cut-throat cost-competitive market. Reliance with its deeper pockets was able to withstand incurring higher capital costs like 5G infrastructure without really passing the burden down to the end user. That strategy was to hurt Airtel from making similar investments without raising tariffs. But the 5G plans, until now, did not come with an extra cost to subscribers. Down the road, Vodafone Idea’s financial struggles led to a mass exodus of subscribers porting over to Jio or Airtel. For the longest time – it was a question of who will blink first in the tariff war. Last week – Jio took the lead, followed by Airtel and Vodafone-Idea immediately thereafter. The new tariff plans for market leader Jio are now as follows: The entry ticket price for a 2GB monthly plan has increased from ₹155 to ₹189 – that’s a jump of almost 22%. The 1 GB per day monthly plan that came for ₹209 will now cost ₹249 – a hike of 19%. The highest annual plan that came for ₹2999 will now cost the subscriber ₹3599 – up by 20% again. A top up of 1 GB that could be bought for ₹15 will now be available for ₹19.That’s 26.6% more expensive. So in essence, India’s one GB cost has moved up from ₹15 to ₹19 in INR terms. Remember I told you India was among the cheapest countries for per GB data? Well, that may still be true when compared in dollar terms. Between 2021 – when the last round of price hike happened – the rupee has depreciated from 73 rupees a dollar to approximately 84 rupees now. So where does the per GB cost in dollar terms land us? Well – not to bad. We are still at $0.22 dollars per GB on the higher side – which still keeps us in the top three countries when it comes to data cost. So while a ₹50 hike in monthly bill would pinch – space a thought for the large 5G investments that telcos are making to give you – the consumer a buffer-free streaming experience. ..............................................................................................
