Marcos Jr. when he joined the nation in commemorating the 503rd anniversary of the Victory at Mactan at the Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City on 27 April 2024. During the celebration, also known as ‘Lapulapu Day’ or ‘Adlaw ni Lapulapu, the President conveyed his gratitude as the legacy left by Lapulapu continues to live on with the Filipinos. “Ito ay nakikita sa pagtitiwala natin sa ating sariling lakas… Ito ay nakikita sa pagmamahal natin sa ating kapwa… Ito ay nakikita sa matapang nating pag-giit sa ating karapatan at sa pagtanggol kung ano ang atin: ayon sa ilalim ng batas, sang-ayon sa pandaigdigang kaayusan, at sa mata ng ating Diyos,” he said. He noted that the challenges confronting the nation today are not dealt with force or arms, but must be faced with everyone’s courage, action and above all, unity. “Ito ang kalasag natin laban sa kahirapan, ang paglaban sa ating mga sakit, sa ating gutom, sa kamangmangan, sa kawalang pag-unlad, at kasalatan ng mga oportunidad na gumiginhawa ng buhay ng bawat Pilipino,” he added. The Chief Executive reiterated the Administration’s steadfast commitment to help the Filipinos rise above these challenges by building more health facilities, schools, providing support for the farmers and opening more business opportunities in the country, among many others. “Sa ating pag-alala ng mga mahahalagang yugto ng ating kasaysayan, ang responsibilidad na ipagpatuloy ang ipinaglaban ni Datu Lapulapu ay nakasalalay sa ating mga balikat, lalung-lalo na ang pagsiguro na ang ating bansa na patuloy na umuunlad,” he stated. “Ipagpatuloy natin ang laban at pagtiyak na ang Bagong Pilipinas ay umapaw ng pag-asa, pagkakaisa at pagkakataon para sa susunod na mga henerasyon,” President Marcos Jr. ended in his message. Under Republic Act (RA) No. 11040, the 27th of April every year is declared as a special non-working holiday in the City of Lapu-Lapu and a special working public holiday throughout the country to commemorate the victory of Lapulapu and his men over the Spaniards in the historic Battle of Mactan on 27 April 1521.
