The US provided military aid to South Vietnam, but not combat troops, and conducted provocative operations and commando raids against North Vietnamese targets. The Tonkin Gulf incident was used as a pretext for escalating US involvement in Vietnam, leading to a high number of deaths and the eventual resignation of President Johnson.
