| Video Discription | Vivek Dehejia of Carleton University in conversation with Richard H. Clarida, C. Lowell Harriss Professor of Economics, Columbia University. Clarida has had a distinguished career as an academic macroeconomist, including being a key contributor to the canonical "new Keynesian" macroeconomic models of the 1990s and 2000s, in addition to research in international trade and economic growth. In addition, he was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy (2002-03) in the administration of US President George W. Bush. Nominated by US President Donald J. Trump, he was Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of the US Federal Reserve System (2018-22). At present, Clarida is Managing Director and Global Economic Advisor, PIMCO. In this wide ranging conversation, Dehejia and Clarida discuss whether our current period of globalization is now coming to an end; the continuity between the Trump and Biden administrations in the use of trade and industrial policy to pursue US economic and national security interests; the role of the dollar as the de facto global currency; and the possibilities for monetary policy coordination and cooperation amongst major global central banks.
