| Video Discription | Pierre Sancan (1916-2008) 'Theme et Variations' (1975) Harp: Andrea Voets 1.7.14, HfM 'Hanns Eisler' Berlin www.andreavoets.com For almost 30 years Pierre Sancan (1916-2008) taught piano at he Paris conservatory. With the help of the modern medical science he perfected a new piano technique, rooted in corporal involvement. He also was a celebrated concert pianist. Composing does not seem to have been his most important goal: he left a limited oeuvre of about 25 works that are hardly known outside of France. So it is even more exceptional that he wrote a solo work for harp, dedicated to the French harp legend Lily Laskine. In this piece, written in 1975, he combines sounds, rhythms and themes from the jazz and film music of those days, with the typical idiom of French impressionism. The hammering chords -not ideal for harp- give away that Sancan is a pianist, who still manages to catch the typical harp sound in his piece and give it his own interpretation. The theme is not always easy to recognize. Short fragments alternate and the harpist has to be able to switch promptly between different states of mind, techniques and atmospheres, without loosing his sense of humor. |
