As per Article 326 the Constitution, all Indian citizens above the age of 18 years, who have registered themselves as voters, are eligible to vote. Any individuals can vote in national, state, district as well as local government body elections. To vote in the elections, a citizen needs a Voter identity card of the specific state or Union Territory to cast his/ her vote.
How do I check where to go and vote?
The right to vote is an inalienable part of a citizen’s right in a democracy, subject to some riders laid down by the state. To be part of this democratic process, it is required to get registered as a voter, and then to finally cast your vote for the candidate of your choice.
Finding the Polling booth
This service, provided by the Election Commission of India, can be used by voters to search their names and get the information related to polling stations in the nation-wide electoral rolls. The search is based on the electoral data of the states and Union Territories. Voters need to provide their details such as name, father's name, state, Constituency, age, gender, etc. to get the information pertaining to polling stations, Assembly Constituency, Parliamentary Constituency, serial number of polling stations, etc.
Search your name in the voter list of your state. This service is provided by the Election Commission of India. Users can search their name by selection their state name. Details such as first name, last name, assembly constituency name, gender, etc. are also required to perform the search. District-wise search option is also available. It is important to reach the correct polling booth of your constituency in order to cast your vote. Voters can search for their polling booth on electoralsearch.in
Note: Photo voter slips not to be valid as stand-alone identification
document for voting.
Electors Photo Identity Card(EPIC) or one of the eleven specified photo
identity documents, essential for casting vote.
The list of eleven documents is:
a. Passport,
b. Driving License,
c. Service Identity Cards with photograph issued to employees by
Central/State Govt./PSUs/Public Limited Companies,
d. Passbooks with photograph issued by Bank/Post Office,
e. PAN Card,
f. Smart Card issued by RGI under NPR,
g. MNREGA Job Card,
h. Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the scheme of Ministry of
Labour,
i. Pension document with photograph,
j. Official identity cards issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs, and
k. Aadhaar Card.
What happens at the Polling Booth
Once you find and locate the polling booth of your constituency, you must reach there between the official voting timings only. At the booth, there will be a series of steps that will take place, and allow you to vote for the candidate of your choice
• First polling official will check your name on the voter list and check your ID proof
• Second polling official will ink your finger, give you a slip and take your signature on a register (Form 17A)
• The voter will have to deposit the slip at the third polling official and show your inked finger and then proceed to the polling booth
• Record your vote by pressing the ballot button opposite the symbol of the candidate of your choice on the Electronic Voting Machine
