When a person is arrested and the family and the accused are looking to hire a criminal defense firm? What are the things that they should look for before they make a decision about a criminal defense firm?
Stephen D. Klarich: [00:17:08] Well, they should probably research that firm, whether it be going online, whether it be going on Martindale, Hubbell or AVO, all these lawyer rating systems where you could find out. How good or bad your lawyer is? Yelp often will give people opinions about the lawyer, but experience is important and that probably is the single most important is experience. So they've done cases like this, specifically these types of cases and that they care and that they care.
Paul J. Wallin: [00:17:43] What about the importance of hiring a lawyer or a law firm that is local to that court? And the lawyer goes there often or very often? Why is that very important to consider hiring a lawyer that knows that local court? How does that work out in real life?
Stephen D. Klarich: [00:18:02] Yeah, knowing the local courts are important, like in our law firm, we have lawyers that are assigned to certain courts. So if you have a case, let's say, in the Central Orange County justice system or in San Bernardino, we have lawyers assigned to those courts. So consequently, they know the DA's, they know the judges. They're part of the bar association. They go out with them for dinners and stuff so they
know them. Now knowing them doesn't mean your case will be dismissed when they walk in the door. Of course not, but it gives your case a step up and more credibility because your lawyer knows which is more reasonable and how to jockey your case in front of the right judge and the right D.A., if you can, to get the best result. But if you're brand new and you don't know the court system, the law is the same throughout the state, but it's administered very differently from court to court.
Paul J. Wallin: [00:18:56] And so much depends on the particular judge you're in front of, right? And is that a very strict censor or is that judge maybe trying to get people into alternate sentencing into drug programs? And if you're not familiar with that court, you're not familiar with that judge. You won't know how to even approach that judge, right?
Stephen D. Klarich: [00:19:16] Like in horses, like in horse racing, you need a racing form. You need information about these people that are going to be judging your loved one. You know your client's life. |
