Surprisingly, despite the severity of the violence they endured, no formal complaint had been previously filed with the police about the incident. The incident has been met with political implications, as the TMC leader, Shashi Panja, accused the BJP of politicizing the matter. Panja stated that a case had been registered regarding the incident and urged against unnecessary politicization. According to her, it was a case of theft where the two women attempted to steal something from the market, and some women took the law into their own hands and initiated the violent beating.
