| Video Discription | DELMAR"A massive survey that asks very personal information is showing up in some mailboxes across the Capital Region. It's called the American Community Survey and CBS6 viewers are asking whether it's The Real Deal. A few weeks ago Marcia Rabinowitz got a postcard in the mail from the Census Bureau asking her to take the American Community Survey. She could either do it online using a code that was provided on the post card or wait until a packet arrived in the mail. "I said, "okay, I've done the Census before, no big deal" and I thought how convenient that they now let you do it online," she says. But after she got through the first few answers, "it was just asking questions that put up red flags for me," she adds. The survey asks where you work, what time you leaves to get there, how long the commute takes and what your salary is, it then gets even more personal asking whether you or anyone in the home has difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions even walking up and down stairs. "There was nothing that I could find that I felt would ensure me that this really, legitimately was the U.S. Government asking me legitimate questions, " Rabinowitz says. The American Community survey is legitimate though. The U.S. Census Bureau randomly selects 3.5 million addresses each year to participate. The Census claims the answers from that sample of people are used to determine how more than 400 billion dollars in federal and state funding is distributed. And, the bureau is pretty serious about getting your answers, "your response to this survey is required by US law, if you do not respond a census interviewer may contact you to complete the survey," the postcard reads. |
