| Video Discription | The alto clef is easy to read and understand if you keep firmly in mind that it is built upon middle C and that the middle line of the stave corresponds to middle C. This video examines why the alto clef exists (blame the alto singers!!) and what voices/instruments use it. The clef is traditionally used to notate instruments, such as the viola and the alto choral part whose typical range of pitches falls outside those of the Treble Clef or Bess Clef stave.
