| Video Discription | Authoritarian regimes typically emerge under conditions that are highly unfavorable for democracy. Yet, we have recently seen returns to authoritarian styles of ruling by leaders in countries which had relatively strong democratic traditions and institutions such as Hungary, the Philippines, Turkey, and Venezuela. How do these new autocratiziers tilt the playing field in their countries and will these strategies further diffuse to established Western democracies? Authoritarian regimes try to present a positive image of themselves abroad. They invest in foreign-facing media, retain public relations firms, and showcase their successes to elite and popular foreign audiences. But authoritarian regimes also try to obscure or censor bad news about their governments and often discredit their critics abroad. How successful are those “promotional” tactics of persuasion and “obstructive” tactics of repression? In this webinar, Professor Lucan Way, University of Toronto, examines both why several democracies have become competitive authoritarian but at the same time why so few competitive authoritarian regimes have transformed into fully closed autocracies despite the decline of Western international hegemony. Professor Alexander Dukalskis, University College Dublin, discusses the international dimension of authoritarian politics and how authoritarian states manage their image abroad. Staffan I. Lindberg, Director of the V-Dem Institute, moderates the session. |
