| Video Discription | Why do my teeth hurt? Teeth can hurt for an number of reasons over the next few minuets we are going to explore several causes of tooth sensitivity. First cause of sensitivity is infection and or decay: bacteria change sugar to acid causing the hard mineral structure in teeth to dissolve causing a cavity. The best way to fix this is to remove the decay and repair damage to the tooth with either a filling or a crown. If damage to tooth is large, the tooth may need a root canal. That sounds bad but to most people that is a better option than losing the tooth. The second cause of tooth pain is cold sensitivity. Teeth have 3 parts the solid and hard outside called enamel, the hard but porous dentin, and then the living nerve on the inside called the pulp. The pulp sends fingers into tubes in the dentin. Water in these tubes can expand and contract when the tooth gets cold. This will put pressure on the nerve fingers in the dentin tubes. The nerve interprets that pressure as pain. There are several ways to fix this. Some toothpastes have an ingredient that helps plug the tubes. Coatings put on the teeth by a dentist or hygienist can help reduce this pain. And a laser can cause the nerve fingers to shrink greatly reducing or eliminating cold sensitivity permanently. The final cause of tooth pain I will talk about is grinding and/or clenching. Some people grind and/or clench their teeth. This can lead to a wearing away of the outer layer of the tooth like we talked about with cold sensitivity but it can also cause the teeth and chewing muscles to be sore, it can even cause some headaches and neck pain. This grinding/clenching can be from a habit, stress or a mismatch between where the jaw wants to bite together and where the teeth want to bite. The best way to fix this is to stop it but sometimes that can't be done so a guard is worn over the teeth like a retainer. A properly made guard will correct the difference in bites between the teeth and the jaw, protecting the teeth and reducing or eliminating pain.
