The Scherzer rule applies to pitchers operating out of Set Position and states that pitchers may not come set before the batter is in the batter's box and alert to the pitcher. However, Angels pitcher Jaime Barria here was operating out of Windup and *not* Set Position (in hybrid form), meaning the Scherzer rule does not apply: there is no "hands together" restriction for pitchers working in the Windup—only pitchers working in Set Position. Pitcher Barria is in windup here because he starts by facing the batter with both hands in front of his body, then begins his delivery by taking a step back before taking a second step forward and throwing the ball. The pitch clock violation automatic strike occurred because Adames argued the prior Scherzer rule violation no-call while the pitch clock was running without requesting "Time" from the umpire. When the clock struck eight seconds and the batter was not yet in the box and alert to the pitcher, the penalty of an auto-strike was imposed. Counsell was ejected here, but Adames was ejected after striking out swinging to end the at-bat and inning. |
