| Video Discription | WHITEHALL, Ohio (WCMH) -- Move out day for residents of a Whitehall neighborhood comes with frustration and fear for those left living at Woodcliff Condominiums. The city of Whitehall says the community is responsible for the longest running environmental court case in Franklin County history. Whitehall Development Director Zach Woodruff says the property was declared a public nuisance in 2008. Citing building conditions and the high number of police runs to the neighborhood, the city of Whitehall purchased the property for just under $9-Million dollars last year. Of 317 units only about 100 are still occupied. The city of Whitehall allowed families with children in Whitehall schools stay through the end of the school year, or the end of May. Most who remain say they still don’t know where they’ll go. Frederick Brown says he wishes his 14-year-old daughter could remain in Whitehall Schools where he says she’s excelled. “It’s killing me. She’s amazing and she’s doing the right thing for herself. And she’s excelling in her school work and everything else and now I gotta rip that away from her. It’s not cool,” said Brown. Kathleen Shrives, who’s lived at Woodcliff twice now since early 2000, says her biggest fear is being homeless again. Now with children, she says she’s concerned now more for them. “Fear. I’m scared for my kids,” she said. Nobody from the City of Whitehall was available to speak on camera with NBC4. Woodruff says, “we’ve been working with everyone out there to make this as orderly a transition as possible. Pursuant to the court order we generally didn’t extend people if they didn’t have school-aged children. Everybody received notice and knew that we were taking this over.” Woodruff added that demolition of the property will likely begin this fall. |
