On October 10, 1944, General Huebner, commander of the US 1st Infantry Division 'Big Red One', delivered an ultimatum to German Forces in Aachen. They threatened to bomb the city if the German garrison did not surrender. The German commander refused. On October 13, 1944, the US 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, started attacking the city center. It wasn't until October 21, that the last German garrison surrendered.
