When WMFE announced that they would be selling their television station to Daystar, a faith-based network in Texas, it motivated two students from the University of Central Florida, Anna V. Eskamani and Ali Kurnaz to take action.
On April 1, 2011, WMFE's announcement came as a shock to the community, mistaken by some to be an April Fool's joke. Both Anna and Ali are native to the city of Orlando; and hence WMFE's decision to sell Channel 24, our local public broadcasting station of 45 years, impacted them at a very personal level. Lucky for them, the personal is political—and soon after the announcement was made, Anna and Ali launched a local campaign as a means of preserving public broadcasting within the Central Florida community.
The campaign, known today as Keep PBS in Orlando, began as a small grassroots effort—but it soon evolved into a large community movement. A campaign with four main steps, Keep PBS in Orlando was designed in an effort to maintain a long-term and vibrant PBS station for the Orlando community. The first step in the campaign was to petition the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deny the transaction of WMFE-TV to Daystar. As an alternative to this strategy, campaign members began brainstorming other ways of keeping PBS in Orlando, which lead Anna to write an opinion piece in the Central Florida Future titled "UCF Could Easily Adopt Orlando PBS." The article proposed that the University of Central Florida (UCF) be the provider for local public broadcasting. It was a well-received article that stirred debate on multiple levels within the Orlando community.
Anna and Ali are happy to see that the PBS is nowhere near RIP. Without a doubt we are thrilled to be able to continue our campaign to Keep PBS in Orlando through supporting the development and growth of WUCF.
When the Keep PBS in Orlando campaign started, the idea of UCF forming a PBS station seemed both ambitious and unlikely. However, on May 26, 2011 the idea became a reality. Indeed, it was on this day that the UCF Board of Trustees (BOT) voted on a resolution to partner with Brevard Community College (BCC) to create a new source of public broadcasting for the Central Florida community called WUCF-TV. The UCF BOT voted unanimously on the resolution. Scheduled to be on-air on July 1, 2011, WUCF-TV will provide the community with both nationally acclaimed PBS programming and locally made programming. The campaign to Keep PBS in Orlando has succeeded in drawing community support for this venture.
We already knew that UCF stood for opportunity—and now we know that UCF also stands for PBS. |
