| Video Discription | The X-43 is a flight demonstrator vehicle series. The X-43 will be dropped from NASA's B-52 and flight tested over Pacific ocean. The goal of the program is to evaluate the high Mach performance and technology of air breathing propulsion. The vehicles are scale demonstrators that are much smaller then actual spacecraft. The X-43 vehicles will not go into orbit and are only intended to help ready the technology to take the next development steps. The X-43B has two variations. One is Rocket-Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) and the other is a Turbine-Based Combined Cycle (TBCC). The RBCC will work as described earlier. The TBCC will be different in that it will not have the rocket component - it will rely upon the turbines (fans) for its acceleration. The RBCC is easy to recognize by its frontal fins or horizontal canards. The turbine plus dual-mode ramjet is planned to achieve Mach 7 flight speed. |
