| Video Discription | 120년 만에 열린 용산공원...오늘부터 시범 개방 Part of what used to be the U.S. military base in Seoul has reopened to the public for a trial run. It's the first time in 120 years that regular civilians have been allowed to visit the site. Shin Ye-eun reports. "Welcome to the trial opening of Yongsan Park." For the first time in 1-hundred 20 years…South Korean civilians can step foot in a part of central Seoul that used to be strictly off limits. For over a century…this area had been only accessible to foreign forces. As far back as the Goryeo Dynasty in the late 13th century, Mongolian soldiers used it as their base. When imperial Japan colonized Korea… it had been a supply base for the Japanese Army. And after Korea's liberation… the U.S. military took over this area. For years…the U.S. military trained here. It was only after the U.S. military base moved to Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi-do Province that this area could finally open up as a national park. Visitors can look around the newly opened Yongsan Park on a tour starting from Sinyongsan station. Their first destination will be the General Quarters… where the U.S. generals used to stay. What's getting the most attention though … is that people can see the southern side of the presidential office. Once visitors walk a few more meters…they can also see a sports field. The tour lasts for two hours… and covers 1.1 kilometers. While many are excited to access the once forbidden area… environmental groups have expressed concerns. Nearly a dozen carcinogenic toxins have been detected in the soil and groundwater of the site... and there's still a need for a clean up. But the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport have assured the public that they have taken care of this. "There's no need to worry. We made sure that visitors don't directly touch or walk on the contaminated parts of the site." Yongsan Park will be accepting up to 25-hundred visitors a day during the trial opening, which runs from this Friday to June 19th. Reservations will be open online. After gathering public opinion… Yongsan Park is scheduled to officially open in September.
