| Video Discription | Yosemite National Park is a majestic place, that holds an abundance of wildlife! But there is plenty more than bears, deer and bobcats! There are animals that are endemic to the Sierra Nevadas, which means they are found no where else on earth, making them truly unique! The Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis sierrae) was once brought to the brink of extinction. These impressive climbers are well adapted to alpine life, but were susceptible to diseases from introduced domestic sheep. In fact, the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep only had 100 individuals left in 1995. Luckily, conservation efforts started just in time and now they're population is over 600 individuals! We take a closer look at an inhabitant of elderberry plants, the Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle (Desmocerus californicus dimorphus). These brightly coloured beetles spend their time on elderberry plants from the time they are born! The eggs of the beetle are laid on the bark of the plant, and as larvae they burrow their way into the stems. It's believed that this larval stage last about 2 years, before they pupate and transform into adults! However, due to habitat loss the beetle's numbers are decreasing and they are classified as threatened. The Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus, formerly Bufo canorus) is quite the character! They are known for their "love song" and it can be heard up to 100 yards away! Males and females look different (sexually dimorphic). They've also suffered serious declines, leaving this once common wet toad a rarity within the park.
