The film was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and became the twenty-seventh animated feature released in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. It was distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution. It was re-released in the USA, Canada, and the UK on March 29, 1996, and again on March 7, 2009 on DVD. The movie was inspired by the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, which has been adapted many other times for the screen. In this version, Oliver is a cat and Fagin's gang is made up of dogs, one of which is Dodger.
