Haniyeh standing by car and waving at crowds STORYLINE: The Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said on Friday that the Hamas militant group will never recognise Israel's right to exist, rejecting a key demand of the international community and signalling further deadlock in efforts to forge a Palestinian coalition government. "We will not give them (the Israelis) this recognition and will not recognise the legitimacy of the occupation," Haniyeh told worshippers at the Alrahmah mosque on Friday. Haniyeh's declaration was likely to increase tensions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has been urging Hamas to recognise Israel as a way to ending crippling Western sanctions against the Palestinians. Hamas has refused to do this causing talks over forming a power-sharing government with Abbas' Fatah movement to stall. Hamas gained control of the Palestinian Authority after winning democratic legislative elections in January. Israel and Western donors have cut hundreds of millions of dollars in transfers to the authority, causing severe economic duress in the Palestinian territories demanding that Hamas renounce violence, recognise Israel and accept past Israeli-Palestinian agreements. The militant group has rejected the demands in spite of pressure from Abbas.
