“As artists, we must evaluate our self-existence to achieve humanity. Creating art with compassion is my way of giving back to society.”
Sculptor James Seet is passionate about devoting himself to public art. Over the years, he has been using pottery as a medium to connect and influence society. To him, pottery is life and is humanistic - his creations always reflected love and care. Seet co-organised an exhibition with the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) where he created 15 head sculptures of women, representing female victims of domestic violence, to raise awareness of the issue. During the pandemic, he created ceramic musical instruments which incorporated elements from nature, hoping to reignite hope into people’s lives using the comforting power of music.
Through the art of pottery, Seet learnt about patience and tranquility. He hopes to speak up for social issues and connect with more people via pottery.

Sculptor and creative director James Seet has worked in Malaysia's ceramics industry for over 20 years. To him, clay represents mother earth and it carries the meaning of regeneration and healing - hence one can feel the humanistic care and love in his work. In 2021, using the grant he successfully applied from the Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA), Seet combined pottery and music by creating 20 pieces of percussion music instruments out of ceramics, which produced an earthy, ethereal sound. He hopes that his creation is able to comfort and provide a renewed sense of optimism to people during this pandemic.
