| Video Discription | This video reviews the main sources of ammonia emissions from agriculture and why this is an issue for both human health and the environment. This is the first glance at a range of topics relevant to arable and livestock (beef, dairy, pigs, poultry) enterprises with further videos giving a more in-depth insight. Mary discusses how the ammonia is produced from agriculture, and puts this into the context of worldwide livestock production. Mary highlights the main mitigation methods for reducing ammonia emissions during all aspects of livestock production and the use of digestates from anaerobic digestion: 1. During livestock production, focussing on diet and housing. 2. During manure, slurry and digestate storage, with methods including slurry store covers, natural crusts and acidification. 3. During application of organic materials (slurry, manure, digestate) to land, including bandspreading (trailing hose and trailing shoe) and injection. This video is useful for all who are interested in ammonia emissions from agriculture, including growers, agronomists and advisors, plus all who want a general overview on this topic. Note that since creating this video Defra have changed their stance on covering slurry stores in England. On 10/12/2023 Defra published an update on their blog. https://defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/2023/10/12/slurry-infrastructure-grant-guidance-now-available-for-round-2/ Scroll down to covering slurry stores where it states: 'One of the questions we get asked the most is whether all slurry stores will need to be covered by 2027. This was a suggestion made in the Clean Air Strategy, published in 2019. Covering slurry stores is a well-established practice to minimise ammonia emissions. It’s set out in the Code of Good Agricultural Practice (COGAP). Earlier this year, the government restated its committed to consult on rules to reduce ammonia emissions from management of organic manures, including requirements to cover slurry and digestate stores. You should be confident that any stores built through the Slurry Infrastructure grant will be compliant with future rules. The scheme has been designed to invest in high specification stores and covers that maximise ammonia abatement. All stores will not need to be covered unless or until new rules are brought in. Farmers will be given plenty of notice and support to implement any new changes. We do not expect that any new rules will require existing stores to be covered with impermeable covers by 2027.' |
