Various explosions over buildings along northern Gaza border around Beit Lahiyah STORYLINE Plumes of smoke were visible over northern areas of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning, as Israel continued its offensive against Hamas-controlled Gaza for the 11th consecutive day. Armoured personnel carriers were seen near Beit Lahiyah, as Israeli troops and tanks amassed at the border. Palestinians said Israeli attacks had intensified before dawn on Tuesday morning and at least 18 people were killed in shelling up and down the strip, local hospital officials said. Only two could be immediately confirmed as militants. Shortly after sunrise on Tuesday, three rockets fired from Gaza fell in southern Israel. Israel has ignored mounting international calls for a cease-fire and says it won't stop its crippling assault until "peace and tranquillity" are achieved in southern Israeli towns in the line of Palestinian rocket fire. Israel has three main demands: an end to Palestinian attacks, international supervision of any truce, and a halt to Hamas rearming. Hamas demands an end to Israeli attacks and the opening of border crossings to vital cargo. As international concern increased over the spiralling numbers of civilian casualties being reported in Gaza, Arab delegates met the UN Security Council in New York on Monday, urging members to adopt a resolution calling for an immediate end to the Israeli attacks and a permanent cease-fire. At the same time, diplomats and European leaders travelled the region in an effort to stop Israel's expanding ground and air offensive. An Israeli military spokesman told Israeli TV the assault was going according to plan, with forces sweeping through Palestinian rocket launching locations near the border and the militants suffering many casualties. Gaza health officials reported that since the campaign began on December 27 more than 550 Palestinians had been killed and 2,500 wounded, including 200 civilians. According to the United Nations, more than 25 percent of the casualties are civilians.
