There’s a very systematic approach to the programme. The accountancy qualification is a large part of the graduate scheme because of the time that you spend on it. Most of the graduates joining the program will go through the accountancy qualification and that's it because most of the graduates are taking into the Audit and tax departments. it's less likely that the graduates in the Consulting and transactions division are put through the accountancy qualification but it really does depend on which team they sit in for example graduate joining the due diligence team or the corporate restructuring team will most likely do the qualification. There are three accountancy bodies which offer the qualification to the graduates at the big 4 accounting firms. The material covered is pretty much the same across all three of the qualifications. Those who studied accounting or accounting and finance at university received exemptions from certain exams on the qualification. Aside from the accountancy qualification there is plenty of training provided for the role specifically to help you with your day-to-day tasks. Training courses cover the technical elements of your role and these sessions happened across all the 3 years on the programme. these courses off-site so normally at some hotel in the countryside. The tutors during these courses are senior employees and the firms and this is useful because they have been in your shoes before and so can tailor the material accordingly. Given I work in corporate finance, my training courses revolved around topics such as valuations, deal management, negotiations etc. You get assigned a mentor from the first day of the programme who is 2 or 3 years ahead of you on the programme and they are available to answer any questions you might have and provide any guidance as required. They might sit in your team or they might not but they're responsibility in that role is to make sure that you settle into the role well. you'll catch up with them on a regular basis and given that they have just gone through the same situation as you they can guide you as to what to expect next so that you are prepared. You also get assigned a More senior mentor, normally a manager or above, of who is responsible for your career progression and general welfare. On top of all this formal support you also have the other members of your team to get guidance from because you have to remember that most of them will have been on the programme at some stage in the past. By having to do the accountancy qualification which is very full on and working alongside there will naturally be a strain on work life balance. There will be plenty of evenings and weekends spent revising for accountancy exams and that's just a reality on the programme.
