📝Brief script:
For students at university studying accounting, business, finance and economics a Financial analyst role is a very sought after and popular first role in their careers. After I graduated from university with an economics degree I knew I wanted to work in finance and get a role which would act as a great foundation to build a career upon, and I felt that getting a position as a financial analyst would be that opportunity.
A lot of people apply for financial analyst roles without particularly understanding what the day to day looks like in that role. Having that knowledge will really help you decide whether a financial analyst role is for you or or isn't. Without knowing about the responsibilities of an analyst you run the risk of taking a job but you don't really enjoy and having to leave that pretty soon after you join, which doesn't look great on your CV.
In this video I’m going to explain what a financial analyst does. When I talk to you what the responsibility is are and what they focus on on a day-to-day basis. I started off my finance career as an analyst at a big 4 accounting firm, in the deal advisory division.
You Can Divide financial analyst at the very highest level in two categories analysts in high finance and analysts in non high finance roles. When I say high finance I mean any industry which deals with the buying and selling of securities so I'm thinking about investment banking Asset Management hedge funds private equity etc. The other analyst roles will be in companies that the general public know, so companies that buy and sell non financial products and services. so this could be for the lights off large corporations such as Amazon Unilever sky etc.
Analysts at investment bank help advise companies on mergers and acquisitions and capital raising activities such as raising debt or raising equity capital through initial public offering etc. Analysis of the wide variety of different responsibilities during a deal but I'm going to talk Through some of the core one's here. one of the main pieces of analytical work that analysts will do is with financial models. Analysts create and review financial models on a regular basis to help with executing deals.
When working on a sell-side role, an important task that analysts get involved in is helping to produce the information memorandum document, a document which tells the story of the company being sold. It contains info such as what the company does, who their customers are, financial performance etc. Analysts study the company and its market to understand what makes the company unique and what are the key selling points of the business that will make it attractive to buyers.
Moving onto equity research analysts on the sell side, so in an investment bank. They Research public companies in depth and make recommendations to investors on whether to buy sell or hold shares in a certain company. The main responsibility revolves around creating a Equity Research report. They will analyse the company they have been assigned and will aim to understand all aspects of that company, Product Services customers competitors operations etc. they will have to keep up to date with any industry news that will impact the companys share price and they will also keep on top of macroeconomic news. They will also create financial models with estimates for earnings in future years.
The FP&A team is part of the finance department and the team performs budgeting, forecasting and analysis that helps companies to make decisions of various types.
