| Video Discription | (16 Apr 1998) Natural Sound The world's financial leaders have agreed there needs to be better access to financial information to prevent another Asian-style economic crisis. But what they can't agree on is how it should be made available. On Thursday in Washington, finance officials from the world's 10 largest economies gathered to discuss ways of better monitoring the world's financial systems. Thursday's session of the Group of 10 nations gathered here at the International Monetary Fund's headquarters in the U-S capitol. Key goals of the session were to improve access to world financial information, strengthen international banking regulations and make countries more responsible for keeping their economies under control. The hope is to create a program that would help preempt future Asian style economic crisis. Economic bailouts for Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea cost the I-M-F more than 100 (b) billion dollars last year alone. The problem is that not all the members can agree on what measure should be implemented -- or how. The Asian economic crisis, particularly fears of an imminent recession in Japan, have dominated a series of high level economic meetings in the U-S capitol. Following meetings in Washington D-C a day earlier, the finance ministers and central bankers from the Group of Seven nations said they welcomed steps taken by Japan to stimulate its economy. But the world's seven richest nations offered little hope they would help Tokyo in its efforts to bolster the sagging yen.
