| Video Discription | Jim Denning served four years as Majority Leader of the Kansas Senate. This interview reveals his Western Kansas leanings, despite having worked, lived and represented Johnson County. HIs legislative interests included health care policy, funding KPERS, and school finance. He described Senate Bill 9--KU Cancer designation--as one of his important contributions. Denning found that Governor Brownback’s tax plan was creating problems for Kansas – “too deep and unsustainable.” Denning's philosophy was, "At the end of the day, you have to govern." Throughout his tenure in the Senate, Medicaid expansion was a pressing issue, but he didn’t like the way the bills were constructed, so he developed a Republican alternative that he thought would be a model for the country. His interview details how he kept the Democratic alternative from passing, but his own bill was caught up in abortion politics and failed to pass. He received a B.A. degree in Finance from Ft. Hays State University in 1980. He and his wife, Marearl, moved to Dallas where they lived for 10 years during which Denning worked for several banks, including the Federal Reserve. An opthalmologist on one of the bank boards recruited him to return to Kansas to work as the CEO of DiscoverVision. Denning's brother, Frank, was the sheriff of Johnson County. Frank recruited Jim to run for the House against incumbent Delores Furtado in 2010 when Jim retired from DiscoverVision. Denning served one term in the Kansas House (2011-2012). In 2012 Jim defeated incumbent Senator Tim Owens in the Republican primary and served two terms in the Kansas Senate (2013-2020). After 10 years, Jim Denning retired from politics. This interview was conducted by the Kansas Oral History Project, Inc.
