| Video Discription | On 25 May 2024, the government surprised military circles and everyone else who is an ardent follower of defence issues, by extending the tenure of the current Army Chief. The COAS was scheduled to retire on 31 May 2024. As per the government notification he has been given a month’s extension. As a result, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi’s appointment as Chief of Army Staff, considered as almost a done deal, is now on hold. The Government has hardly ever extended the tenure of a Chief of Army Staff. The Government did extend the tenures of Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw and Gen GG Bewoor in 1974, in the bargain denying the assumption of the rank of Chief of Army Staff to Lt Gen PS Bhagat, a brilliant officer who would have become the Chief had no intervention been made by the government.
