| Video Discription | This 1950 Oliver HG Hercules IXB-3 engine had not been started in a while. The old Zenith carburetor (wrong model), and the fuel line/tank were all gummed up. The Wico Model XH-1113 magneto was not creating spark. The wiring was a chicken's nest. I replaced the carb with a modern Zenith, cleaned the fuel lines and the gas tank, and I added a newly refurbished magneto. I also swapped out for new spark plugs and plug wires while I was at it, plus I disconnected all the wiring at the generator to exclude any short circuits. 1. The engine fired up first time but raced. This was mostly due to the idler screw on the carb being ill-adjusted. However, the carb to governor rod has been welded and the end swivel is missing making the whole assembly too short. 2. With adjustment, the engine settled down to a better idle but the messed-up carb to governor rod continued to annoy. The engine revved a bit inconsistently because the magneto timing was a little out. 3. With the magneto timing adjusted, the engine throttles up and down smoothy and it is very responsive. I still have to change out the bad carb to governor rod so that the idling will sit down correctly. See OliverCrawlers.com |
