You can listen to more of her music at http://jaclynsteele.com/ BEHIND THE SCENES:I had been wanting to do a film - a story - about the creative process of song writing. I’d seen Jaclyn Steele perform and talked with her and our friend Michael Capella. They asked me to do a film for her Atlanta debut, so I wrote kind of a loose screenplay (true story) outline and wanted to refine it with them. It would’ve involved reenacting their meeting and reenacting their writing of one of their more popular songs. My friend and fellow filmmaker Michele Houston and I came to Michael’s house and set up a few cameras planning to capture some “B-roll” of one of their twice a week song writing sessions. Jaclyn arrived after we’d set up, and I proposed my very loose story/filming ideas to her. She explained that she didn’t want to reenact anything or recite any prepared lines. What she had in mind was a documentary. I explained that a film, even a documentary, needs a story. At that point, I thought we weren’t going to have a film after all. Since we were already set up, though, Michele and I filmed their songwriting session. Amazingly, Jaclyn and Michael actually wrote a song during that session. We had three hours of video (on multiple cameras) to condense down to just a few minutes, but it was a great start. Michele had another appointment, but I planned to film Jaclyn and Michael’s house concert the following week. I did a reconnoiter of the site and found there wasn’t nearly enough light to film, even with my Canon 5D Mark II. The room had ten-foot open-beam ceilings, and I got permission to clamp two 600 LED panels to the ceiling beams and one little YN-160 above and behind Jaclyn. Those were the only lights in the room that we had on. During their 80 minute performance, after one of their songs, an audience member asked them how they’d gotten together. If I hadn’t been busy filming (with no cameras on that woman), I’d have run up and hugged the woman who asked that question. She elicited more of Jaclyn’s story right there in the middle of the performance. We had our story.
