| Video Discription | This historic video is Sidney Vance Stephens and Mark Steelé auditioning inside a Best Western motel banquet room for a 1992 national talent search and simultaneously competing in a contest to win a recording session at Big Mama Studios in Knoxville, Tennessee. Sid's awesome original songs, their really cool hats, and their combined obvious talent easily won the competition (and also, they were the only contestants to show up). A few months later, they traveled twenty hours and seventeen minutes, in two separate cars, to Knoxville from Santa Fe, to record a three song demo with no bass player ever in the band. Sid financed his portion of the trip by selling his Granddad's, baby freakin' blue, white vinyl top,1970 Dodge Dart, which he dearly loved more than any human, to his bodacious girlfriend, Teresa, who eventually gave it back. He also panhandled crappy home-made cassette tape recordings to total suckers around town for ten bucks each. The band's unofficial, highly effective, acting manager, Jamie, organized a fundraiser gig to cover the cost for the drummer, Dave, since he had a bunch of kids and a pregnant wife and really didn't have any extra money to waste....I mean, "invest". Everyone else had their own money somehow and assumed it was a vacation, but it wasn't. It was really serious music, man! It was the entire future of Americana! Just ask Shelly. She was there! She might have been the unofficial fan club president and the entire fan club. The recording studio appointment had been spitefully bumped by LeVar Burton who just had to be recording overdubs for some show nobody ever watched called Reading Rainbow. Luckily, the band arrived early and were allowed to jump in the studio the day before their scheduled booking. No thanks to LeVar! (Kidding-everybody genuinely loves LeVar) It was an epic trip complete with a stop off in Nashville afterward where Mark begged on songwriter night stages to become rich and famous. No one obliged. Probably because the drummer had to go back to see his new french fry baby, leaving the already incomplete band even more incomplete. Well, that's not really true. We didn't actually even have a drum set. It belonged to Mark's little brother, Micah. No one accepted their unsolicited brand new, shiny demo tape on Music Row as they walked the famous street, knocking on doors of record label corporations, and schmoozing secretaries and janitors. The tape case even had a fancy homemade J-card. Sidney did leave a copy at the desk of Warner Records with a super secret password his brother in the radio station industry gave to him, but there was no response. It can only be assumed the music was just too good for the record label and they just didn't have a budget big enough to truly entice them, so why bother? |
