| Video Discription | Meyer Lansky was one of the major figures in organized crime and the founder of the National Crime Syndicate in the late 1920s. In this video we will follow his life from when he came to the US until his death in 1983. When he first arrived in the USA as a Polish Jew who experienced pogrom in the Russian Empire, Lansky was a part of a poor Manhattan immigrant family. As a youngster, he met his lifelong associates in Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano. Together with his friends, Lansky created connections and started making lots of money thanks to gambling and the prohibition. As gambling was considered illegal back then, Lansky decided to pay off the police and the neighbors so they wouldn’t give him any trouble, instead of doing it the violent way. His most fruitful time was during his operations in Cuba, where the Cuban dictator Batista allowed him to open casinos and create a haven for rich Americans. After the revolution, he had to flee and returned to USA. The FBI tried to find evidence of his involvement in the mafia, but, as smart as Lansky was, he managed to cover everything up and lived out his days in freedom, before dying of lung cancer at the age of 80.
