Vlad’s father, Vlad Sr, was having internal issues in Wallachia. He managed to remain the ruler thanks to the help of the Ottomans, who wanted his sons as prisoners as a tribute. During a war between Hungary and the Ottomans, Vlad left the Turks and took over his father’s throne, who was killed by the Romanian boyars. He’d get dethroned two more times in the following years and get back on it. It was basically a back-and-forth game between the Sultan and Hungary whose guy was going to sit in Wallachia. Once again on the throne, Vlad decided to kill the boyars responsible for his father’s death. As a ruler, he was extremely cruel, and almost any kind of opposition was dealt with a death penalty. He created a forest of impaled bodies. Vlad chose against paying taxes to the Sultan which resulted in a war. Knowing that the Turks were coming, Vlad poisoned all the water wells and burned down the southern part of his country. Later, Hungary imprisoned Vlad for 14 years and forced him to fight against the Turks. The ruler of Wallachia took away around 80,000 lives before he lost his in a battle. His decapitated head was sent to the sultan – to be impaled on a stick.
