The possibilities, endless. Our vision, guided by the wonders of our imagination. What do you want to be when you grow up, we are asked. A doctor, a firefighter, an astronaut, the president! With that limitless potential, those high aspirations are still possible in our minds because we know that within the numerous choices we will have to make, out of the infinite possible pathways our life could lead, somewhere out there, is at least one path that will lead to the realization of our dream. Then something happens. We age, and those pathways begin to diminish into a mere handful of possibilities, that infinite potential no longer seems infinite. Then, these pathways suddenly begin to feel like trenches we cannot escape from, growing deeper and deeper. This continues until we have reached one, single possible pathway where choice seems irrelevant and the destination inevitable. What causes this dim view of life? It is the same thing we are driven so hard to achieve as we grow up, IDENTITY. We are driven to find our place in this world. We experiment with our own capabilities and look to the world to validate us and tell us who we are. Until one day, we feel that we have received enough data from the world, and we accept what we have been told. We choose our identity. It is like a blueprint we follow to tell us how to act, the choices to make, and what we are capable of doing. It drastically limits our potential, but makes the path we choose clearer and more vivid, or more predictable. For example, I may come to learn that I need to be very smart to be an astronaut, and no evidence that I have found tells me that I am smart, therefore, all those pathways to becoming an astronaut fade away because I no longer believe that it is even a possibility. As we look at our identity and the world around us, we continue to block off more and more pathways of life. We see the same thing happen in the language we speak. When we are born, there are potentially thousands of phonemes, or sounds we are capable of making, but as we learn our language, the number of phonemes we speak reduces to only 44! If it English that you speak. The rest of those phonemes disappear as we lose the ability to produce those sounds anymore. Similar to that loss of phonemes from thousands to merely 44, the further we develop our identity, the number of potential pathways of life drastically reduces. That means, if there is something we want in life, with infinite potential, a pathway to get there always exists. But when we have a developed identity, we may have already blocked off that pathway. Our identity prevents us from achieving what we want because it doesn’t follow the blueprint we have created for our lives. We no longer believe we are capable, so that pathway no longer exists. Even if we know what we want and have a vision of obtaining it, our identity may have already blocked off that pathway. The problem is, we attach ourselves to our identity, because it gives us security, it shows us our place in this world. But that is why this meditation will focus on letting go. Letting go of our identity, letting go of the limits that hold us back that block our path to our dreams. Once we let go, those pathways to success will reappear, you will begin to understand your true potential, rather than the one the world tries to tell you. So when you aim for what you want and visualize it, that path will be there, and you will be guided effortlessly down that path until your dream has become a reality.
