| Video Discription | Hello I'm Joan and this book is called When Things are Alive they Hum by Hannah Bent. And I think it should be on everybody's reading list. It's the story of the bond between two sisters Marlowe and Harper who grew up in Hong Kong together. But their mother died when they were very young so they have a particular connection between them which they say hums. Marlowe now has a great new life in England. She's doing some fascinating research studying at university and she's got a terrific new boyfriend and then one day she gets the phone call to say that Harper is in hospital in Hong Kong and she needs to go home. Harper has Down's syndrome. But I love the way she sees the world. She refers to it as Up syndrome. So Marlowe goes home to see what she can do and puts herself into some truly precarious frightening situations trying to find the right medical remedy for her sister. This is a book about the strength of siblings. It's beautifully written. I loved it. |
