Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Learn How to Send Birthday Cards to Customers with Excel.
Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel netcast, where we answer your burning questions about Excel. I'm your host, Bill Jelen, and today we have a question from George about sending birthday cards to customers. If you have a question for the netcast, don't hesitate to reach out to us via email or voicemail and we'll feature it in a future podcast.
George works in customer service and wants to send birthday cards to his regular customers about a week in advance. However, when he tries to use the TODAY function to check if a customer's birthday is within the next 7 days, he gets strange results. This is because the TODAY function calculates the number of days since a specific date, rather than the number of days until a future date.
To solve this problem, we need to use the DATE function. This powerful function allows us to specify a year, month, and day to create a specific date. In this case, we will use the customer's birth month and day, but change the year to 2007. This will give us a date that falls within this year, allowing us to accurately calculate the number of days until the customer's birthday.
By creating a new column with the DATE function and comparing it to the TODAY function, we can easily see which customers have birthdays coming up in the next 7 days. This allows George to send out birthday cards in a timely manner and keep his customers happy. And the best part is, when he opens the spreadsheet next week, the TODAY function will automatically recalculate, making it easy to stay on top of upcoming birthdays.
So, a big thank you to George for sending in this question and to all of you for tuning in. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more Excel tips and tricks, and we'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.

George would like to mail birthday cards to all of his customers. He has date of birth in his database, but unfortunately, comparing =TODAY() to a birthday in 1942 doesnt provide a lot of information. In Episode 539, we take a look at the DATE function used to solve this problem.
